UN DAY 2022. Remarks of the UN Resident Coordinator for Moldova  Mr. Simon Springett 

I am humbled by the number of people who have joined us this evening – on this United Nations Day. Thank you

We are stronger together.

With this, I would like to express my gratitude for the support and partnership extended to the United Nations in the Republic of Moldova.

We are 631 staff from 25 Agencies, Funds, Programmes and the Bretton Woods institutions  engaged across all areas of sustainable development. Many of whom are here with us this evening.

Madam Prime Minister

The Republic of Moldova joined the United Nations 30 years ago – 30 years of commitment to multilateralism and partnership – the cornerstone of peace and shared responsibility.

This is especially important at this moment in time when we require diplomacy to steer us towards a more peaceful and prosperous future.

The world, and the Republic of Moldova, are facing a multitude of interrelated challenges.

The war in Ukraine is one of the greatest challenges ever to the international order and the global peace architecture, founded on the UN Charter.

The invasion by the Russian Federation is a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and of the UN Charter.

The war is also inflaming a three-dimensional crisis - food, energy and finance.

Turbulence remains in our common future and we all feel the enormity of responsibility to support citizens and communities – to leave no one behind.

The well-being of people around the world and here in Moldova, the health of our planet, and the survival of future generations depends on the choices we make – or fail to make – today.

And our willingness to come together around a commitment to collective problem-solving and action.

Madam Prime Minister

Throughout all of this, the United Nations remains a strong and reliable partner to the Government of Moldova.

We congratulate the Government of Moldova on achieving EU candidate status.

We further congratulate the Government of Moldova on the path to adopting the National Development Strategy “European Moldova 2030”.

Our main concern as the United Nations in Moldova is to support your main concerns and priorities – which are fully represented in our UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-2027 which I look forward to signing with you in the near future.

From 2023 to 2027, the UN in Moldova in coordination with government will work across four strategic pillars – the ones you can see visualized across the room – stretching across the entirety of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The outcomes are aligned to the “European Moldova 2030”, the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, and sectorial strategies and plans.

The United Nations system, in the Republic of Moldova is bigger than the sum of its parts – the 25 UN agencies, funds and programmes who work hand in hand under the Cooperation Framework to deliver joint results against government priorities.

To conclude, I would like to thank:

• The government, including all ministries, for working hand-in-hand with us
• NGOs, civil society, private sector and the academia for partnering with us
• Member states for trusting in us and helping us every day to be better
• our UN staff and head of agencies for working tirelessly as one United Nations
