A very good morning, everyone and thank you to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for co-organising this event. I would also like to welcome our experts from Greece, Romania, Serbia for being able to join us in Chisinau.
In September 2015, in a historic decision - and thanks to the joint work of the road safety community and governments - improving road safety was included in the Sustainable Development Goals.
In the same year the second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 was proclaimed with a target to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.
It is obvious that the Government of the Republic of Moldova is committed to taking action to improve road safety performance. Road safety indicators are improving but there is a lot of things to be done to improve the road safety system and its performance.
The Road Safety Performance Review (RSPR) was designed to help Moldova to strengthen the road safety system and effectively address and improve the national road safety records. In addition, RSPR can be a foundation for the preparation of National Road Safety Strategy.
Apart from RSPR Moldova, the UN family is engaged in preparation of draft national road safety strategy and number of road safety campaigns. The UN stands ready to help in and other way requested to support improvements in the national road safety system.
As a Resident Coordinator in Moldova, I very much support road safety efforts of the Moldovan Government and I hope that we can use the results of the Performance Assessment to its best affect.
Rest assured that UN is ready to offer technical assistance for further improvement of national road safety system, in particular implementation of actions connected with RSPR recommendations.
