The deployment of this Moldova National Army Contingent within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been a historic first.
I am honoured and grateful to be able to welcome you safely home to Moldova!
The contingent was stationed in a country and region that have long struggled with instability. Even during these last few months, we are aware that the situation has been volatile, with continuing political tensions and security incidents that have the potential to escalate further. In this context, the presence of UNIFIL remains as important as it was during its establishment in 1978, and Moldova’s support is a direct contribution to ensuring the peace and stability of Lebanon and the region.
I therefore wish to express the United Nations’ deepest appreciation to the members of the contingent arriving home today.
We thank you and your families for your service.
As a contributing United Nations member state to peacekeeping efforts, the deployment of the Contingent to UNIFIL, clearly shows the Republic of Moldova commitment to multilateralism and international solidarity and to be an active contributor to international peace and security efforts.
Thank you to the General Staff, individual officers, military personnel, civilians and experts who have taken part, or will take part, in UN Peacekeeping Operations.
And again, a very warm welcome home after a job well done!
