UN Moldova COVID-19 Weekly Situation Report nr39

● Epi situation update in education system According to the latest updated data from the Ministry of Education, on November 9, 6 educational institutions in the country operate remotely due to quarantine measures as is the case of 153 classes. The number of students tested positive with COVID-19 is 227 (up from 203 last week), and 4386 (last week- 3967) students were placed in self-isolation. 300 (last week - 283) teachers have been positively confirmed with the new Coronavirus and 234 are in isolation. Of the non-teaching and auxiliary staff, 73 (64) people were infected with the new virus, and another 89 (71) are in self-isolation.

● COVID-19 procurements IOM provided a batch of 16,750 masks to the Border Police procured from the funds of the COVID-19 UN Trust Fund; UNODC and UNAIDS provided a batch of 1,500 protective gowns to the National Prison Administration of the Republic of Moldova, Penitentiary Hospital No.16, Pruncul. The donation was made from the UBRAF fund (United Budget Results and Accountability Framework) of UNAIDS and UNODC Moldova; The Embassy of Czechia provided a batch of PPEs to several hospitals for patients with mental disabilities from Moldova in the amount of approx. 33,000 USD.

● New partnership to support women On November 5, UN Women concluded a partnership agreement with the Organization for Small and Medium Enterprises Sector Development (ODIMM), a public non-profit institution established under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure. This partnership aims to contribute to the implementation of the national strategic plan on COVID-19 recovery and empower women, especially those who are the most affected by the pandemic crisis, providing chances for income security, decent work and economic autonomy. The project will also look to tackle pre-existing barriers to business faced by women which are now compounded by COVID-19 and its knock-on effects – inaccessibility to financial services, lack of a mentoring and network platform, and competing gendered priorities amongst others. The initiative is being implemented with generous support from the Government of Japan.
