07 May 2020

The United Nations delegation, led by the World Health Organization, accompanied by the OSCE Mission to the Republic of Moldova has completed a technical mission to the Transnistria Region on May 6, 2020.

Under the key objective of leaving no one behind, especially during this crisis, the visit sought to understand the measures taken on the left bank of Nistru River in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and to make an on-the-spot assessment of the immediate needs for support.

The representatives of WHO and UNICEF focused on health-related technical preparedness, which should be in place to ensure the pandemic is brought under control. A special emphasis was made on the surveillance and risk assessment practices, risk communication and community engagement, case management, infection prevention and control, virus detection, logistics and supply management.

During the mission, the representatives of the international organizations paid a visit to the COVID-19 Crisis Center in Tiraspol, the Virology Laboratory at the AIDS Center,  and the Tiraspol Clinical Hospital. They also spoke to health workers from the psycho-neurological long-care facility in Tiraspol. The WHO and UNICEF experts emphasized the paramount importance of protecting frontline medical workers as well as of taking preventive measures by the population such as physical distancing and washing hands. Based on discussions and the results of the mission, further directions for next activities will be identified, in line with ongoing work of the United Nations around the globe in fighting the COVID-19 virus.

In Moldova, the United Nations family response to COVID-19 pandemic is led by the World Health Organization, which is co-operating with and supporting the Moldovan Government and the people of Moldova.
