Moldova adopts upgraded migration data tools with IOM support to strengthen governance and meet EU standards
04 September 2025
- The Government of the Republic of Moldova officially adopted the updated Extended Migration Profile (EMP) template with a related set of indicators. This upgrade is a milestone in strengthening evidence-based migration governance and aligning Moldova’s migration data reporting with the European Union and global standards.
The formal endorsement, published in the Official Gazette (GO #542) on 26 August 2025, marks Moldova’s commitment to advancing regular, systematic and comprehensive reporting on migration dynamics and governance.
“With IOM’s technical support, the updated Extended Migration Profile framework will help Moldova advance evidence-based migration policies and meet EU reporting standards, reflecting IOM Moldova’s ongoing commitment to strengthening migration governance,” commented Ester Ruiz de Azua, IOM Moldova’s Chief of Mission.
The comprehensive revision of the EMP model was carried out by Moldovan national stakeholders, with technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The enhanced EMP 2.0 framework now incorporates the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), Migration Governance Indicators (MGIs) and the standards of EUROSTAT - the European Union's statistical office in charge of providing high-quality statistics and data on Europe.
The updated Extended Migration Profile is a tool nationally owned and mandates twenty-six Moldovan institutions to systematically collect and report migration data on an annual basis, while improving the database needed to design, implement and monitor migration policies and regular pathways.
This activity was implemented within the framework of the Joint UN Moldova Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund Programme (MMPTF) “Leveraging the Positive Impact of Migration on Moldova’s Development through Improved Policy Evidence and Better Engaged Diaspora”.
