UN Special award for remarkable achievement in promoting gender equality and women empowerment 2024 was won by the Association of Women Entrepreneurs from Moldova (AFAM). 

The Association of Women Entrepreneurs from Moldova (AFAM) has been a transformative advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment since 2013. By fostering entrepreneurship and leadership, AFAM addresses systemic barriers and creates economic opportunities that empower women to take active roles in public and economic life. With over 70 members across 20+ industries, their impact is extensive and meaningful.

AFAM has organized over 250 events, seminars, and mentorship programs to support women entrepreneurs. As a member of the Economic Council under the Prime Minister of Moldova, AFAM contributes to policy development, advancing a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem. They played a key role in establishing the National Council for Economic Empowerment and Gender Equality, focusing on human capital, market access, and policy reform to support women's economic empowerment.

In 2024, AFAM launched a capacity-building project supported by the East-European Foundation and funded by Sweden to strengthen internal structures and expand their impact. Their collaborations with organizations like UN Women enhance their advocacy for innovation, inclusion, and gender equality.

Through diverse business and lifestyle events, including training, mentorship, and masterclasses, AFAM fosters the personal and professional development of women entrepreneurs. Their professionalism and strategic partnerships make them a key driver of sustainable development and societal equity in Moldova.

While collaborating with UN agencies, AFAM's activities are funded independently, with limited direct financial support from the UN. Their dedication reflects a strong alignment with UN principles of gender equality and sustainable development.
