The Perinatal Center and the Emergency Unit of the Căușeni District Hospital were equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, handed over in an official ceremony, which took place in Căușeni. The equipment was donated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as part of UNFPA's humanitarian response to the Government in ensuring sexual reproductive health for refugees from Ukraine and the local population.
"Maternal health is at the heart of our mandate and we advocate for a world where every pregnancy is wanted and every birth is safe. UNFPA reconfirms its commitment to support the strategy and efforts of the Ministry of Health in order to strengthen the perinatal service in the Republic of Moldova. We do this by equipping hospitals with modern medical equipment, training medical staff and revising protocols, so that the birth experience is a positive one," said UNFPA Assistant Representative, Natalia Plugaru.
In total, UNFPA, with the financial support of the Swedish Embassy, invested approximately 7 million lei in the Căușeni District Hospital. From this money, they were rehabilitated, equipped with modern medical equipment and furniture: the delivery rooms, the operating room, the recovery room for women, the neonatal resuscitation room and the Blood Transfusion Department of the hospital's Perinatal Center. Also, the Perinatal Center received a Type A Ambulance, which will ensure the rapid transfer of women at risk of complications and premature birth to higher level perinatal centers.
In addition to rehabilitating and equipping several wards with medical equipment, the Unit for survivors of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, was also established in the Căușeni District Hospital. This was set up with the support of UNFPA in coordination with the Ministry of Health, with the aim of responding to the immediate needs of victims of violence. A gynecological examination room with the necessary high-performance medical equipment and kits for post-rape assistance, a psychological support room, rooms for the medical staff, a meeting room and a sanitary block adapted to the needs of people with disabilities are available within the unit.
"Thanks to the quality of the hospital's services, the flow of patients coming to us is slightly increasing, which motivates us to create new perspectives. We are aiming for new performances with new equipment that will simplify the work of doctors and help them establish a clear and prompt diagnosis. Also, now we provide medical services both to the population of the Republic of Moldova and to refugees", stated the Director of the Căuşeni Regional Hospital "Ana și Alexandru", Viorel Ceban.
As part of its emergency response to the flow of refugees from Ukraine, UNFPA, in collaboration with other partners, supports the efforts of the Ministry of Health in increasing the resilience of the National Perinatal Health Service of the Republic of Moldova. Key interventions in the last two years include equipping 12 perinatal centers with modern medical equipment, providing essential equipment and supplies for blood banks in health care facilities providing emergency obstetric care, delivery of 29 ambulances, improvement of coordination between national and subnational perinatal centers as well as training of health professionals in obstetric emergency case management.
