Launch of the EU-supported project on strengthening the rights of minorities in the Republic of Moldova
29 February 2024
- UN Human Rights in Moldova (OHCHR) has started implementing a project funded by the European Union that aims to strengthen the rights of minorities in the Republic of Moldova.
Throughout this 21-month project, OHCHR will work to enhance efforts to improve the enjoyment of all human rights by ethnic or linguistic minorities in the Republic of Moldova, including in the Transnistrian region. A three-level approach, combining work with State authorities, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society organizations and minorities will be applied to achieve that.
OHCHR will strengthen the capacity of the State structures to respect, protect and fulfil minorities’ rights through international and regional human rights protection mechanisms and their application at national level. OHCHR will also empower CSOs and minorities to claim their human rights and increase their participation in public life and access to services. The project furthermore aims to improve the ability of State institutions to apply a human-rights based approach to data with a focus on minorities. This will also be supported by the National Human Rights Institutions.
“Through this initiative OHCHR will aim to significantly expand the respect, protection and fulfillment of rights of minorities by focusing on the promotion and protection of minority identities; equality and non-discrimination; and effective and meaningful participation" said Bea Ferenci, UN Human Rights Adviser in Moldova.
The European Union is an economic and political union of 27 European countries. It is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
