UN Moldova joint statement on marking two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine

24 February 2024

  • Today we mark two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Two years of tragedy that is being felt both inside and outside of Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine has compelled millions to abandon their homes and communities, seeking safety in neighbouring countries or within Ukraine itself. Over 1,000,000 refugees from Ukraine have passed through the Republic of Moldova, with more than 116,000 Ukrainian refugees presently residing within communities across the country.

Joining efforts with international and national partners, the United Nations in the Republic of Moldova has been there to support the Government and its citizens as well as refugees from Ukraine to cope with the impacts of the war by providing urgent humanitarian assistance, including protection services, legal assistance, food and non-food items. In addition, the United Nations and partners worked to ensure refugees have access to health care, education, and economic opportunities.

The UN Country Team has continued to work with local and central authorities to help them become more resilient to future crises and shocks and, while responding to the emergency, keeping a strong focus on implementing the reform agenda for the sustainable development of the country.

“Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we have had two years of fighting, two years of suffering, two years of stoking global tensions and straining global relations. It is time to recommit to the Charter and renew respect for international law. That is the path to peace and security – in Ukraine and around the world.” Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General addressing the Security Council on Ukraine.

As we mark this tragic day, the United Nations expresses its solidarity with those affected by the war. The United Nations also underlines the importance of a robust multilateral system, based on the principles of the UN Charter, to address threats to international peace and security, and urges unity in action to support further and deliver for the well-being of Moldovan citizens and refugees from Ukraine.
