The Breast Cancer Early Detection Campaign will run from October to December 2023 with the aim of increasing cancer awareness and early detection of precancerous conditions and breast cancer. During the campaign, regional breast cancer early detection centers will be opened in Chisinau, Balti, Ungheni, and Causeni to provide free medical consultations, information, lab tests, and diagnostics to women refugees from Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova, to Moldovans and all migrants in the country.

“The difficulty of refugee women, often in fragile and impoverished settings, compounds the challenges they face in accessing healthcare. Language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and unfamiliar healthcare systems can all hinder their ability to detect breast cancer early. That is why this campaign is of utmost importance” stated Selma El Khawad, IOM Moldova's Emergency Coordinator, during the official launch.

Since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, 950 refugees in Moldova have received cancer care and treatment through IOM’s support.
