Simon Springett, UN Moldova Resident Coordinator on behalf of the UN Country Team on the occasion of the United Nations Day
Dear citizens, partners, colleagues.
Today, we mark United Nations Day.
A day to highlight the values and principles of the UN Charter, the work of the United Nations in Moldova and the importance of global unity, multilateralism, and solidarity.
Working together, 24 United Nations agencies, funds and programs in Moldova, continue to support the Government and people of Moldova to face the multiple challenges. From the impacts of the war in Ukraine to addressing the difficult socio-economic challenges.
Together, we have supported over 120,000 refugees from Ukraine who found temporary shelter in Moldova, 22,000 Moldovan host families who opened their homes and hearts to refugees and 20,000 Moldovan and Ukrainian children to access formal and non-formal education since the beginning of 2023.
More than 56.000 families have been assisted to meet their essential needs during the cold period of the year through the UN Moldova Solidarity Program.
Throughout this period, despite all challenges, the United Nations in Moldova, and our partners, continued to support the country to make progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
From policy improvements to support for complex reforms, from gender equality and human rights promotion and protection to youth empowerment, from climate action to participatory governance and social cohesion, the UN Moldova aims to support the government to offer a better and sustainable future for all people, leaving no-one behind.
On this United Nations Day, I would like to say a heartful thank you to all our partners for their unwavering support and trust.
I would also like to thank the 634 staff in Moldova, who are the backbone of this organization, for their dedication and commitment.
UN Day is Your Day! Happy UN Day!
