Press Release

The 74th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations

18 September 2019

  • Over one hundred world leaders will gather at UN Headquarter in New York in the period 23-27 September 2019 for the 74th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

The high-level week takes place in the context of challenges humanity is facing, such as climate change, respect for human rights and inclusion, poverty reduction, universal access to health system and education and others. Leaders of state, government, representatives of international organizations, private sectors and civil society will seek to find solutions to boost action on climate changes, accelerate the progress on sustainable development, finance for development and other issues of global concern.

During the week, five summits will take place focusing on accelerating the implementation of Agenda 2030 for a sustainable development, thus on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The Goals have been adopted by world leaders in the year 2015 and guide the policies and financing for the next 15 years, with a historic promise to end poverty. Anywhere. Forever. This year is for the first time since the adaption of the SDG when they will be discussed at the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

Every annual session of the UN General Assembly starts with general debates at high level, this being the biggest reunion of heads of state and government.
