The United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations pays his first official visit to Moldova

During his visit, ASG Jenča met with President Igor Dodon, Speaker of the Parliament Zinaida Greceanîi, Prime Minister Maia Sandu, and Deputy Prime Ministers Andrei Nastase and Vasile Sova. He also met with representatives of the civil society and the diplomatic community.

ASG Jenča congratulated the Government on the peaceful resolution of the recent political crisis. He welcomed Government’s commitment to fight against corruption and to carry out deep reforms including justice reform. United Nations stands ready to continue supporting the government in those efforts. “Peaceful, transparent and free elections are of utmost importance for the continuous process of democracy building in the country” ASG Jenča said referring to the local elections to take place on 20 October 2019.

ASG Jenča reaffirmed the UN’s support for the OSCE-facilitated mediation within the 5+2 format and welcomed positive signals, including in the broader region, that could bring about progress toward a solution of that long standing issue.

United Nations stands ready to continue multi-faceted cooperation with and support for Moldova in the implementation of the Agenda 2030. The partners also exchanged views on moving forward on gender equality and respect for human rights. They also discussed the preparations for the upcoming 74th session of the General Assembly, focusing on climate change, sustainable development goals and preventive diplomacy.
