Annual competition for the best actions that promote and protect human rights in Moldova was launched

“UN is looking for nominations of human rights champions, both individuals and organizations, which deserve appreciation and recognition for their tireless efforts towards promotion and protection of human rights and universal freedoms in the Republic of Moldova", said Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova.

This year, UN in Moldova will award two persons or entities:

• The Award for the promotion of the principles of equality in dignity and rights and leave no one behind - for an outstanding lifelong (time consistent) advancement of human rights. This award comes in the context of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Human Rights Declaration.
• The Award for Outstanding Human Rights Achievement in 2018 - for persons or entities who have made a genuine contribution to the human rights promotion and protection in Moldova during the period of September 2017 – October 2018.

The deadline for nominations is 3 November 2018. Both nomination of third parties and self-nominations are accepted.

Similar to previous years, the nominations can be submitted online at http://www.un.md/concurs/ or to the United Nations House in Chisinau. The rules of the competition are available at on the UN in Moldova’s webpage. The forms may be filled in Romanian, Russian or in any minority’s language of the Republic of Moldova, or in English.

The nominated folders with materials, derived from the public consultation process, as well as on the basis of other available materials, will be reviewed by a team of experts and an independent board consisting of representatives of international organizations and independent experts.  

The winners will be announced and awarded the prizes during the UN Human Rights Gala of Awards, organized annually on the occasion of Human Rights Day, celebrated on December 10th.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN on 10 December 1948. The Universal Declaration – translated into a world record 500 languages – is rooted in the principle that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” It remains relevant to everyone, every day.
