Sweden and UNDP provide grants to communities for increasing their resilience to climate change and to women for developing environmentally friendly businesses

  • Sweden and UNDP are launching two calls for grants for local public authorities (LPA) and women entrepreneurs from Nisporeni, Calarasi, Basarabeasca, Leova districts, Gagauzia region, security zone (Dubasari district) and Transnistrian region. The competitions are conducted by the “Sustainable and resilient communities through women empowerment” UNDP project, funded by Sweden.

The call for grants for LPAs aims to select 30 communities from the mentioned districts, which will benefit from up to US$16,000 each, so as technical assistance for carrying out projects aiming to increasing communities’ resilience to climate change, to reduce disasters’ risks and to contribute to sustainable development of the respective communities. The communities with a minimum population of 2000 inhabitants and willing to contribute at least 10% of the requested amount are eligible. The project proposals may be submitted by rural and urban communities from the target areas. A community can access one grant only. More details about the requirements and eligible activities for financing may be found here. The deadline for submitting the project proposals is 15 November 2021, 6:00 p.m.

Another call for grants aims to select 10 women-led companies operating in the mentioned districts, which will benefit from to $18,000 to start or to develop a business which would be environmentally friendly and resilient to climate change, such as climate-related smart agricultural activities, business in alternative energy and waste process areas, eco-tourism, and others. Registered or under-registration women-led companies, which can contribute with 20% of the requested amount, may participate. Besides the financial support, the selected entrepreneurs will benefit from mentorship and guidance for business development. During 2-5 November, the experts of the UNDP Project and Global Business Access Company, which is responsible for managing these calls for grants, will conduct information sessions on the requirements in the target districts. During 9-10 November, several trainings will be organized and those willing to participate need to register here (for LPAs) and here (for women entrepreneurs).

The “Sustainable and resilient communities through women empowerment” project contributes to sustainable development and increased resilience to climate change of localities from Nisporeni, Calarasi, Basarabeasca, Leova districts, Gagauzia region, security zone and Transnistrian region through economic, social, and educational empowerment of women. Project’s beneficiaries are environmental NGOs, local public administrations, women entrepreneurs, as well as women-led households from the target districts, which will be assisted in identifying, formulating, planning, and implementing initiatives to reduce environment degradation and increase resistance to climate changes at local level. The project is implemented by UNDP during 2020 – 2023, with financial assistance provided by Sweden.
