20 August 2017

  • To celebrate the United Nations Day, UN in Moldova organized on 24 October an Open House event. More than 130 people, mostly school and university students, visited the UN House and learned firsthand about the work of the United Nations agencies and projects in Moldova.

“Coming back from abroad, I wanted to find out how I can help Moldova. Today's discussions, debates and visit made me understand what the UN is doing here, how it helps the citizens of this country, and inspired me to get involved even more, because we all count”, noted Eugenia, a 12th grade student at “Stefan cel Mare” high school.

Participants took the tour of the UN house on 31 August str., which hosts resident agencies since 1994. Since 2014, the ground floor of the UN building is fully accessible to people with disabilities. On 1 March 2017, an elevator was launched, which makes UN house accessible for all visitors.

More than 130 people visited the UN House, visitors were divided in 4 groups, each group depending on the areas of interest that they chose:

  1. Governance, human rights and gender equality
  2. Sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth
  3. Environmental sustainability and resilience
  4. Inclusive and equitable social development

These four areas are contained in the new cooperation program "Republic of Moldova - UN Support Framework for Sustainable Development 2018-2022", which is guided by the national development priorities, the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Visitors met with representatives of several UN agencies and received answers to their questions.

"It was a great experience for us, political science students, because, unfortunately, the numerous lessons about the United Nations remain only theoretical", said Oleg, 23 years, master’s student.

UN in Moldova organized an open house event for the first time on 20 October 2015, on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

The United Nations has established its presence in the Republic of Moldova through its specialized programs and agencies, immediately after its accession to the United Nations in 1992.

On 24 October 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the United Nations were founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.
