19 April 2017

  • Thanks to the EU support, inhabitants from Gura Bicului and Bicioc villages will enjoy improved services in the local Family Medical Center. In Gura Bicului village, Anenii Noi district, the Medical facility that assists people from both banks of the Nistru River was refurbished in the framework of the EU-funded Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme, implemented by the UNDP.

The Family Medical Center provides medical services for 3,600 locals and over 800 people living in Bicioc village (left bank). The re-opening of the Center was organised in a special day for local community – village day. Locals, guests from Bicioc village participated at the inauguration event, as well as representatives of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova and United Nations Development Programme.

The refurbishment of the institution is the first EU-funded project in the Gura Bicului village.

“The Family Medical Center was built in the ’80’s. Since then, the building has never been refurbished due to financial constraints. The roof, doors, windows and all engineering networks: electricity, sewerage and water supply, as well as the heating systems got damaged. The medical personnel faced huge difficulties to provide services at modern standards in such conditions. In winter, because of the low temperatures in the rooms, during the examination, the babies could catch a cold”, says Lilia Brehova, the mayor of Gura Bicului village.

“I can’t believe we have worked in such conditions”, notes Elena Cotelea, a nurse from Gura Bicului with 30 years of experience, while looking at the photos of the building before the reconstruction.

With 171,060 EUR provided by the EU, equivalent of the village's annual budget, extensive reconstruction works were conducted at the Medical facility. Taking into consideration the importance of the center, the community contributed also with 2,223 EUR.

“Now the center looks like a new one. We can benefit from medical conditions at the same standards as in a city, or even better”, tells Galina Pascalova, inhabitant of Bicioc village.

Since 2009, within the EU - funded Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme over 80 social institutions from both banks were refurbished or even built, endowed with equipment and furniture, 17 out of these institutions are medical facilities. The Programme contributes to enhancing the confidence between people living on both banks of the Nistru River by involving the representatives of local authorities, business environment, and civil society in joint projects of business development and social infrastructure improvement.
