19 May 2017

  • UNDP Moldova and the management of the “Mihai Viteazul” high school, with the support of Mobiasbanca organized the second tree planting event, part of the campaign “Make apples cool”.

More than 1000 children participated in the festive event celebrating the importance of apples throughout history and in daily life. The small apple orchard was planted by this year’s graduates and was kindly offered by Codru ST and Alextehagro LTD.

“These 25 trees offered to our institution by “Make apples cool” campaign, with the occasion of the 25 years anniversary of the school, these are not simple trees. They will be a part of our team that will request attention and individual care, which we assume with great pleasure. One day, they will become big trees, and each apple from their harvest will have a special price for us”, said Nelly Berezovschi, Director of the “Mihai Viteazul” high school.

The project “Make apples cool” aims to increase gradually the fresh fruit consumption by children and students in kindergartens and schools, covering at this pilot phase 5 schools and kindergartens in Chisinau that were selected on a competition basis.

Starting with November 2016, more than 3,500 children are receiving twice a week, freshly sliced and packaged apple snacks, result of a crowdfunding campaign that raised funds from business entities and more than 120 international donors (www.picivoinici.md). A series of thematic events have been organized in schools and kindergartens with the support of Mobiasbanca, Moldova Fruct, Linella and Medpark.

The current initiative is part of the project "Innovative business development for local sustainable economic growth", funded by the Government of Norway and the UNDP and supported by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, which aims to promote innovation in small and medium enterprises’ sector, through the transfer and absorption of knowledge, technologies and communication between businesses. The project runs from 2014 to 2017.
