- Sports activities will become more exciting for the children of Proteagailovca village, situated on the left bank of the Nistru River. This is because the local school gym is being refurbished for the first time in almost 60 years after it had opened its doors for the first time. The investments, in amount of 134,000 euros, were provided by the European Union, in the framework of the "Support to Confidence Building Measures" Programme, implemented by the UNDP.
Several generations attended Proteagailovca school, built in 1960. Students and teachers remember that last year the gym faced a lot of challenges: the equipment was old, the roof was in disrepair and flowed, old windows needed to be replaced. "The gym has never been repaired. With time, it was damaged and became impractical for sport lessons", said Eugenia Chiose, the school principal.
Now the works are in full swing: "Workers have already changed the old windows with new ones. The floor, plaster and all engineering networks are being changed. The locker room and sanitary facilities will also be repaired. The gym will meet all modern requirements. I want to see kids going with pleasure at sports lessons", noted the school principal, Eugenia Chiose.
"We will practice sports in appropriate conditions. Previously, when it was raining outside, the room was flooded", said Vitaly, a pupil in the 5th form.
Proteagailovca village has 3,300 inhabitants. The gym is the only hall for sports activities in the village and the largest one compared to other nearby villages and even Bender city. Not only children practice sports here, but also adults, that’s why everyone waits for the reopening, in August this year. Basketball and tennis classes will take place, besides the already existing handball, football, table tennis and volleyball classes.
The hall will be used for organising sports events with the participation of the residents from neighbouring villages. Joint events with the participation of locals from Hirbovat village, right bank of the Nistru River will be conducted. "Sports have an enormous potential, it is not just about competition but also about strengthening friendship and mutual understanding", says Alexandra Teber, sports teacher.
This is one of over 70 infrastructure sites renovated through the European Union funded “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Programme implemented by UNDP Moldova. The Programme contributes to enhancing the confidence between people living on both banks of the Nistru River by involving the representatives of local authorities, business environment, and civil society in joint projects of business development and social infrastructure improvement.
