18 March 2017

  • At the 25th anniversary of Republic of Moldova’s membership in the United Nations, UN in Moldova organized on 2 March an Open House event, opening its doors to ordinary citizens. More than 130 people, mostly students, had the opportunity to visit the UN offices and learn more about their work.

“Our doors are always open to you, and anytime you want to know more about us, you are welcome to come and ask. I am very happy to see so many of you, who have expressed their interest to come and visit us. I am really excited about the opportunity to exchange thoughts with you, and not only share my insights about my more than 22 years of work within UN, but also to hear from you about what do you like to hear more about the UN”, said UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Dafina Gercheva.

Participants took the tour of the UN house on 31 August str., which hosts resident agencies since 1994. Since 2014, the ground floor of the UN building is fully accessible to people with disabilities. On 1 March 2017, an elevator was launched, which makes UN house accessible for all visitors.

More than 130 participants visited the UN office in four groups, divided according to their interest area:

  1. international cooperation and relations
  2. democratic governance, justice, equality and human rights
  3. human development and social inclusion
  4. environment, climate change and disaster risk management.

The visitors met UN representatives and had their questions answered.

“I came for the Open Doors Day at UN Moldova together with my students from the Department of Psychology and Social Assistance at ULIM. They have shown a strong interest for the UN activities in the Republic of Moldova. The students wanted to understand better the ways the UN Agencies operate in the social field. Our university actively cooperates with different UN Agencies in projects related to child rights, inclusive education and women in politics”, explained Tatiana Gribincea, professor at Free International University of Moldova (ULIM).

UN in Moldova organized an open house event for the first time on 20 October 2015, on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

On 24 October 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the United Nations were founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.
