United Nations opens information centre at National Library of Moldova

17 November 2016

  • The United Nations (UN) opened an information and documentation centre at the National Library of Moldova (BNRM) on November 29, 2016. The launch took place within the Forum of Managers of National System of Libraries, with the topic “The libraries involvement in promoting and achieving the 2030 Global Goals”.

“Libraries play a key role in communicating about 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and hope this information centre will train young people, in particular, in discussions about solutions to the challenges Moldova is facing”, said the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Dafina Gercheva.

“By providing public access to information and knowledge, libraries may be involved in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”, said Elena Pintilei the BNRM’s general director.

The new UN Information and Documentation Centre is situated at the second floor of the National Library of Moldova, reading room nr.1, and is open for students, professors and researchers interested in UN’s efforts to promote democracy, diversity, sustainable development, and a healthy environment for everybody.

The centre will also host events discussions, public lectures, organized jointly by the UN and BNRM.

The United Nations in Moldova supports three more information centres, in Balti, within the University „Alecu Russo”, in Comrat, within the Regional Public Library and in Chisinau, within the Free International University of Moldova.

Also at the Forum of Managers of National System of Libraries, library managers discussed how their institutions can contribute to communication about the 17 Global Goals and the involvement of users in actions that can make the difference. On 25 September 2015, the 17 Goals were approved by United Nations General Assembly and aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years under what is called the 2030 Agenda. In the Republic in Moldova, the process of nationalization of the goals is now in full swing, with the support of the UN family in Moldova.

Recently, UN Moldova launched a communication campaign about the Global Goals (Global Goals – local actions). With simple video spots and illustrations, the objective of the campaign is to highlight how the Global Goals will work for the benefit of people, the planet, peace, prosperity and partnerships. The campaign illustrates how small steps taken by any person can make a difference. Social media users will be engaged in photo competitions and debates.

The UN was established in 1945, on the ruins of the Second World War to maintain the international peace and security, to develop friendly relationships among nations and to promote social progress to a higher standard of living and human rights.

Seventy years later, the UN is composed of 193 member states. The Republic of Moldova will mark next year, on March 02, its 25th anniversary since joining the UN.
