Press Release

UN and its partners are developing the 2018-2022 UN Development Assistance Framework for the Republic of Moldova

20 September 2016

  • The UN Country Team and its partners are conducting a Strategic Prioritization Event on 20 September 2016. This is a key step in the development of the 2018-2022 UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the Republic of Moldova.

The new UNDAF will describe the collective actions and strategies of the UN and its partners for the achievement of national development priorities in the coming five years. It will also be a critical tool for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Moldova. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted unanimously by all UN member states in September 2015 and comprises 17 Global Goals, the Sustainable Development Goals, covering social, economic and environmental development.

“We highly appreciate our cooperation with the United Nations and we hope that the new cooperation framework will support the development of human potential with a specific focus on innovation in the Republic of Moldova. I am firmly convinced that this event will result in agreement of the priorities for development cooperation with the UN”, noted Octavian Calmic, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Republic of Moldova.

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Dafina Gercheva said: “The Republic of Moldova recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its independence. In these 25 years the country has gone through complex changes and made important steps towards building and developing a modern democratic state. At the same time, it is no secret that Moldova will have to overcome a number of challenges on its development path. The United Nations will remain your reliable development partner and together we will spare no effort in building a better future for all people of Moldova”.

Drawing on preparatory analytical work, including an evaluation of the current UNDAF (2013-2017) and a country assessment, four tentative areas of cooperation for the new UNDAF were discussed:

  1. Governance, human rights and gender equality;
  2. Sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth;
  3. Environmental sustainability and resilience; and
  4. Inclusive and equitable social development.

The Strategic Prioritization Event brings together the UN, Government counterparts and civil society representatives for substantive discussions on the new UNDAF. The event is attended by approximately 15 UN agencies, including a number of non-resident agencies, whose representatives came to Moldova on this occasion.

The participants are reviewing major national development challenges and the comparative advantages of the UN in Moldova to respond to them, thus creating the basis for a relevant and nationally owned new UNDAF.
