Press Release

UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova on International Day of Democracy

14 September 2016

  • UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Dafina Gercheva, on behalf of the UN Country Team, extended her sincere congratulations on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, celebrated yearly on 15 September. “On this occasion, we take a moment to underscore the perennial values and importance of strong, accountable and transparent institutions, rule of law and democratic norms for the development of sustainable, inclusive and prosperous societies”, noted Dafina Gercheva.

In September 2015, the world's governments agreed on the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Democratic principles run through the Agenda and the associated Sustainable Development Goals like a golden thread, from universal access to public goods, health care and education, to safe places to live and decent work opportunities for all. Goal 16 addresses democracy directly: it calls for inclusive societies and accountable institutions as essential for sustainable development across all sectors.

“The Republic of Moldova has taken important steps and made significant progress on the path of democratic governance”, said UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Dafina Gercheva. The United Nations is committed to further supporting the Republic of Moldova in building the legal framework, capacitating institutions and developing skills which support national efforts to reduce poverty, sustain the environment, ensure access to justice for everyone, protect and promote human rights and advance human development.
