IOM and the Academy “Stefan cel Mare” strengthen collaboration for improving the training capacity in the area of Immigration and Border Management

The  Academy „Ștefan cel Mare” of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic of Moldova and the International Organization for Migration, Mission in the Republic of Moldova signed today, 20th March, in Chisinau a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing the collaboration framework for joint activities enhancing the educational process of the police officers and supporting capacity building of the law enforcement agencies in the Immigration and Border Management domains.

Mr. Lars Johan Lönnback, the Chief of Mission of IOM Moldova stated that: “signing of the MoU is a landmark moment for broadening the collaboration of the two institutions, serving to enhance service provision by the police officers as well as the evidence-based policy making in the area of immigration and border management”.

The MoU formalises a long-standing cooperation between IOM and  the Police Academy, started back in 2000s, laying the foundations for further strenghening of the engagement.

Mr. Valentin Chirița, the Vice-rector of the Police Academy greeted the signing of the MoU, declaring that: “its signing is an important formal step in furthering the collaboration on the important aspects related to migration, the Academy maintaining a special academic and practical interest in the area, all geared towards improving the capacity of the new generation of police officers”.

The MoU aims to contribute to strengthening the institutional and operational framework of the Immigration and Border Management in Moldova according to the best EU and international standards and practices through enhancing the capacity of the Border Police and other Police agencies in Moldova with competences in this domain.

To that end, the two parties decided to join the efforts and resources to enhance the relevant training curricula and other instruments for building capacities of the staff of the Border Police and other Police agencies in Moldova, conducting studies and research, organizing events of academic and scientific nature, exchanging data and information in areas of common interest related to the Immigration and Border Management.

Both sides highlighted that the cooperation within the framework of this MoU will ensure the continuity and sustainability of the efforts of the Republic of Moldova and its international partners for continuous enhancing of the operational capacities of the country’s Police structures in accordance with the existing best international standards and practice.

This activity takes place under the IOM project „Development of psychological integrated services of the Border Police Department in the Republic of Moldova (SPINS)” funded by the IOM’s International Development Fund (IDF).
