With EU support culture revived in Molovata village

20 June 2017

  • Starting with today, unique cultural events will become normal in Molovata, a picturesque village on the bank of Nistru. The European Union funded the refurbishment of the cultural facility in the community, in the framework of Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme, implemented by the UNDP. So, the beginning of a new era for the cultural life of the village started on Tuesday, 18 of July, with a creative flash-mob on the Molovata ferry and a concert of classical music.

The Moldovan National Youth Orchestra (MNYO), as well as musicians from Tiraspol played classical music on the Molovata ferry - which connects the two banks of the Nistru River. As Adriano Marian, the conductor of the MNYO says, the flash mob is a part of the La, La Play tour that has the purpose to play classic music in places where it has never been performed, highlighting important social topics.

Locals have met the musicians traditionally with bred and salt and invited them to the Cultural hall, newly renovated with the EU funding in the amount of 172,800 euros.

“Common cultural heritage is one of the most powerful factors uniting people from both banks of the Nistru river. I am glad to ensure you that the EU is and will be supporting the initiatives bringing the communities closer in the spirit of confidence and cooperation”, said Jarek Domanski, project officer at the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.

“This is one of more than 80 social infrastructure objects already reconstructed on both banks through this Programme. Our experience with them shows that people from both sides of the river have the same interests and problems, and when given the opportunity to do something together, they engage and benefit too. This is the underlying philosophy of the Programme – that by working together to solve common problems, people from both banks can gain more, and increase trust between each other”, noted Stefan Liller, UNDP Moldova deputy Resident Representative.

Now, the Cultural Hall can afford delivering cultural events of different format. “This is an edifice that annually hosts over 35 social and cultural events. Our community preserves and promotes traditions”, says the mayor of the village, Igor Brinza.

The Cultural Hall also hosts the local library. “Before the renovation, the roof was completely damaged and was leaking. Now our books are safe. No more rain in the library”, tells Vera Oxente, librarian.

The refurbishment works started in June 2016. Extensive reconstruction works were conducted: the roof was strengthened, the façade was renovated, the windows, doors, and engineering systems were totally replaced. The building was endowed with sanitary conditions. The cultural facility has also gained access to water and sewerage systems, so as heating, as a result of the contribution of local administration – over 10,000 euros.

The Molovata Cultural Hall is one of over 80 infrastructure sites renovated through the European Union funded Support to Confidence Building Measures Programme implemented by UNDP Moldova. The Programme contributes to enhancing confidence between people living on both banks of the Nistru River by involving the representatives of local authorities, business environment, and civil society in joint projects of business development and social infrastructure improvement.
