Other twenty public institutions will be connected to biomass heating systems

These 20 projects were selected out of the 32 applications that qualified for the final evaluation by the Selection Committee of the Energy and Biomass Project at its last meeting this year.

The final evaluation of the projects submitted for funding focuses on the mobilization of local financial resources, availability of biofuel, technical and energy feasibility of the premises selected to be connected to heating systems which operate on green and solar energy, and proper estimation of the project costs.

The nine members of the Selection Committee are representatives of ministries and key industry institutions, as well as of the development partners, such as the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Ministry of Regional Development and Constructions, Ministry of Education, Energy Efficiency Agency, Energy Efficiency Fund (as observer), EU Delegation to Moldova, UNDP Moldova, and the Energy and Biomass Project Moldova.

To receive EU funding for installation of biomass heating systems under the Energy and Biomass Project the interested community had to send a letter of intention. Afterwards the local committees drafted the project proposal for connection of selected public institutions to biomass heating systems (and, if appropriate, installation of solar collectors). The experts of the Energy and Biomass Project Moldova assessed the energy performance of the selected premises, recommended the technical parameters of the renewable energy technologies and what needs to be done to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings. Since 2011, about 190 schools, kindergartens, community centers, hospitals all across Moldova have installed modern biomass heating systems with the financial support of the Energy and Biomass Project. Thanks to the new technologies, over 130,000 persons enjoy a higher environmentally safe thermal comfort. The list of 20 projects approved for investments can be downloaded here.

The 2011-2017 Energy and Biomass Project is a two-phase project with the mission to contribute to the reliable, competitive and sustainable production of energy from biomass, which is the most viable and available source of renewable energy in the Republic of Moldova.
