Mr. Simon Springett – New Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Moldova

  • As of 1 October 2019, Mr. Simon Springett is officially appointed as the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator (RC) in the Republic of Moldova.  

Mr. Springett brings 25 years of international experience of humanitarian and development work. He will lead the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO), which purpose is to coordinate the efforts of the UN Country Team operating in Moldova to ensure provision of efficient and effective assistance to accelerate the country’s development in line with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Prior to assuming his duties at the UN in Moldova, Mr. Springett acted as the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Director for Response Operations by the UK Department for International Development/Palladium. Mr. Springett has also served for five years as the UN Resident Coordinator, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, and UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in both The Republic of Mauritius and The Republic of Seychelles. Earlier in his career he also held several key management positions within the international charity confederation Oxfam.

The UN RCO is responsible for implementing the global UN reform package unveiled by the Secretary – General in 2018. The comprehensive reform programme highlighted the need of a UN development system that is more integrated, to a greater extent focused on delivery on the ground, with clearer internal and external accountability for contributions to national needs, and with capacities, skillsets and resources better aligned to the 2030 Agenda.

The UN RC in a country is the designated representative of the Secretary-General and aims to bring together resident and non-resident UN agencies, funds and programmes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at a country level and committed to deliver shared results, including through a redesigned UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).
