Press Release

The Government invites stakeholders to engage in the process of preparing the second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

12 January 2026

  • The Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by initiating the process of drafting its second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2026 Voluntary National Review will present progress across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and will include an in-depth analysis of the following SDGs: SDG 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation,” SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy,” SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” and SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals.” The drafting process will involve central and local public authorities, the private sector, civil society, academia, and development partners, with the support of the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova.

The preparation of the 2026 Voluntary National Review represents an important step in strengthening transparency, monitoring progress, and identifying challenges in the Republic of Moldova’s path toward sustainable, inclusive, and equitable development.

Accordingly, on 30 December 2025, during the meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development Coordination, the structure of the 2026 Voluntary National Review was validated, along with the mechanism for appointing focal points within each authority. Consequently, ministries and the National Bureau of Statistics will designate representatives to serve as focal points for public authorities in the report drafting process.

In this context, the Government of the Republic of Moldova launches a call to representatives of civil society, academia, private sector, development partners, public authorities, and all interested stakeholders to actively engage in the drafting, consultation, and communication processes related to the second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. All contributions and recommendations may be submitted to: planificare@gov.md.

The report will be presented at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, to be held in July 2026, under the theme “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and for a sustainable future for all.”

The 2030 Agenda was adopted by the Republic of Moldova in September 2015, alongside the other 192 Member States of the United Nations. In 2016, the country carried out the nationalization of the SDGs by developing a comprehensive set of indicators for monitoring and evaluation, establishing baseline targets, intermediate targets for 2023, and final target values for 2030.

The first Voluntary National Review was prepared in 2020 and presented at the 16th session of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, reaffirming the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to sustainable development.

The preparation of the second Voluntary National Review is coordinated by the State Chancellery, based on Order No. 336 of 19 December 2025 issued by the Secretary General of the Government, which approved the activity plan for the process. The main inter-institutional coordination platform is the Council for Sustainable Development Coordination.
