Global Goals, local actions – each of us can make a difference

The 17 Goals were approved by the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September 2015 and aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years under what is called the 2030 Agenda. In the Republic in Moldova, the process of nationalization of the goals is now in full swing, with the support of the UN family in Moldova.

Now a new communication campaign will engage the Moldovan public to take individual action in support of the Goals. With simple video spots and illustrations, the objective of the campaign is to highlight how the Global Goals will work for the benefit of people, the planet, peace, prosperity and partnerships. The campaign illustrates how small steps taken by any person can make a difference. Social media users will be engaged in photo competitions and debates.

The 24th of October was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as UN Day and is celebrated since 1948. “Humanity has entered the era of sustainability – with a global commitment to fulfil the great promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  In this, the Organization’s 71st year, we have 17 goals to propel us towards a better future for all on a healthy planet”, noted Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in his traditional message.

Every year in this occasion the UN in Moldova conducts a series of events under the umbrella of a UN week. This year, the UN in Moldova Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Dafina Gercheva will deliver a public lecture on the 2030 Agenda and the results of UN-Republic of Moldova cooperation at the Academy of Public Administration. The event will take place on 25th October.

To mark the UN day, some members of the staff are going to schools and are talking to pupils about diversity, accessibility and equality. Accessibility is a top priority of the UN in Moldova, the organization being engaged to lead by example: among other measures, an elevator to ensure access for each and everyone in the UN House is being installed; the UN premises were optimized to ensure better accommodation of staff and visitors with visual impairments; and interns from sub-represented groups, including persons with disabilities, have been recruited.

On 24 October 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the United Nations were founded to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Seventy-one years later, the UN has 193 Member States and Moldova celebrates the 24th anniversary of its UN membership.
